Discussion Question: Prioritizing “Working on the Business”
As a leader, one of your biggest challenges is shifting from working in the business (handling daily tasks) to working on the business (focusing on strategy, growth, and long-term improvements). There is always a gravitational pull to deal with immediacy.
However, this leadership shift requires stepping back from immediate technical work and thinking like a tactician, guiding your team toward success.
Part 1 Reflection questions:
Reflect on your role and consider the following three questions:
1. Identify a Shift:
Think about your current leadership approach. Where do you spend most of your time — is it focused more on the
• Immediacy, i.e. solving technical problems, handling daily operations, or
• Taking a boarder perspective and thinking strategically?
What is one area where you could step back from execution and focus on improving your business area as a whole?
2. Prioritize the High-Value Work:
If you could free up five hours per week to “work on the business,” how would you use that time?
What strategic initiatives would receive your attention?
Describe one specific system, process, or capability you would develop that would create the greatest long-term value for your team or organization.
3. Overcoming Barriers:
What’s the biggest obstacle stopping you from dedicating more time to working on the business?
Is it habit, workload, team dependency, or something else? What specific action can you take in the next month to begin making this shift?
